Have an app idea?
Check the first version is small enough to try, and leave with a one-page brief.

Your answers stay on this page only. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere, and reloading the page clears them. Copy or download the brief to keep it.

Quick start: Describe your app idea in the five boxes, then answer the five focus questions. You’ll get a plain result and a one-page brief to copy or download. Want to see it filled in first? .

01 / Your idea

Describe the idea

What goes wrong, or what takes too long, today? Describe it without mentioning the app.

One kind of person, as specific as you can. “Everyone” is too wide to start with.

The one thing the app helps them do. If you need “and”, it may be two jobs.

The least you could build that still does the job once, start to finish.

Good ideas that can wait until the first version has been tried.

02 / Focus test

Is the first version small enough?

0 of 5 answered

  1. 01Is the problem mainly for one specific kind of person?

Yes if you could picture one real person who has it. No if it’s for “anyone” or several very different groups.

  2. 02Does the job fit in one sentence without “and”?

Two jobs joined by “and” usually means two first versions. Pick one.

  3. 03Could the smallest first version be ready to try in a few weeks or less?

A rough guess is fine. If it needs months, it’s probably not the smallest version yet.

  4. 04After someone uses it once, could you tell whether it helped?

For example, they finished the job faster, or didn’t need their old workaround.

  5. 05Have you left out at least one thing you’d like to build?

A real leave-out list means you’ve chosen what matters first.

03 / Result and brief

Answer all five questions

Details

This is the browser experiment. You can use it here without installing anything.

Browsers limit what a website can access on your computer, so some features may be unavailable here. A desktop version can usually work more directly with your files, folders, devices, or operating system.

How this browser version works

  • The result is guidance about how focused the first version is, not a judgment of whether the idea is good.
  • Nothing is saved or sent. Reloading or leaving the page clears it, so copy or download the brief to keep it.
  • One idea at a time, from your own answers. No market data or outside research.

What a desktop version could offer

  • Keep briefs for your ideas in a folder you choose.
  • Work on an idea offline and pick it up later.
