Plenty of equipment gets replaced while it still works, or after a small, fixable failure. Cleaning it up, testing it, and putting it back to work is satisfying, and it usually teaches me something about how it was built.
Topics in this note
- Cleaning before judging: dust, grime, and dirty controls
- Testing safely before trusting a device again
- Small fixes that bring things back: fuses, switches, connectors
- Finding a new job for older gear
- Recycling what really can’t be saved
Reused doesn’t have to mean worse. A lot of older gear was built to be opened and serviced.
